You may want to start a discussion by creating contents. To create content, click on the Create Content link in the Navigation Bar in the left sidebar.

For registered users, there are four types of content you can create, namely: blog entry, forum topic, pictures (i.e., upload pictures and probably create galleries), and polls. For how these items are differentiated from each other, you can read the descriptions after you click on the "Create Content" link.
